The French Riviera attracts thousands of visitors each year who spend their time soaking up the Mediterranean sun on beaches, indulging in French cuisine and toasting picture-perfect sunsets with rose wine. Unfortunately the weather does not always cooperate which presented the perfect opportunity for a few fellow travellers and I to hop on a train and head to Grasse.
Grasse is a quaint French town that was founded in the early 11th century. The original architecture remains; which adds to the hilltop town’s rustic appeal. Well-known for its perfumeries, Grasse`s aromatic scent of scattered rose petals tickled my senses upon arrival. I took a deep breath of fresh air while taking in the lush rose gardens, narrow cobbled streets and panoramic views.
After visiting the Musée du Parfum, we were drawn to a bustling food market offering a variety of French edible treats, and some arts and crafts. The live music, carousal and camel rides attracted fans of all ages. We went straight to the food stalls where we sampled pesto sauces, olive oils, macaroons, home-made chocolate and nougat.
After indulging in Nutella crepes, we hopped on the Little Grasse Train which was a great way to see more of the town. The expert driver negotiated the narrow alleyways as we listened to some historical facts and continued to be snap-happy. I was particularly drawn to the collection of art works showcased in gallery windows. Modernistic sculptures, paintings and sketches both intrigued and inspired me. I thought of the numerous artists who reside in Grasse. It seems like an ideal spot, as an artist, to start the day with a café au lait at a corner café before getting the creative juices flowing.
At the end of the day as we descended down the hill towards the train station, I took a final mental picture of Grasse that aptly fits its slogan: “˜Grasse – the balcony of the French Riviera’.
