October is Transport Month in South Africa and Minister of Transport, Dr. Bonginkosi Blade Nzimande officially launched the 13th anniversary of the October Transport Month Campaign (OTM) in Benoni, Ekurhuleni Municipality. The theme of the campaign is “Together we move South Africa Forward” showcasing transport infrastructure development and services across all modes of transport including public transport and road safety in the country.
Transport also plays a large role in tourism industry. Here’s a look at the various modes of transport from around the globe that you can use, on your next big adventure.
1. Cyclo, Vietnam
The cyclo is commonly used in Vietnam. The three-wheeled bicycle taxi is supported by two front wheels and the driver sits behind you.
2. Gondola, Italy
The traditional flat Venetian boat is popular and charming in Italy. Gondola’s are a favourite among tourists, particularly in the summer.
3. Hydrofoil boats, Greece

Boda Boda’s are bicycles and motorcycle taxi’s found in East Africa. In Kenya, they are commonly called Piki Piki’s.
9. Bamboo Train, Cambodia
Affectionately known as the ‘norry’, the bamboo train is a flatbed made of bamboo that is placed on wheels. The bamboo train is powered by a small tractor engine.
10. Coco Taxi, Cuba
The Coco Taxi is named after a coconut due to the shape resemblance. This unique kind of transport is a scooter that is driven by gas power.
11. Shanghai Maglev Train, China
Launched in 2002, the Maglev train is the world’s first and only maglev line in operation. This amazingly fast train can go as fast as 430 km/hour.
12. Tangah, Pakistan
Tangah is the traditional transport used in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. The hand painted carriage is pulled by a horse and has two large wheels at the back. The tangah comes with a protective canopy at the top.
