Planning a holiday to Italy? Here’s something to keep in mind. Visiting cultural sites such as the Colosseum in Rome won’t be free on the first Sunday of each month for the next while.

Italy’s newly appointed Minister of Culture Alberto Bonisoli and the Italian government announced the end of the practice of granting free entry to monuments and museums, saying it’s no longer sustainable. There are more than 480 cultural sites in Italy that have opened doors for travellers to enter for free on the first Sunday of every month as part of a program known as Domenica al Museo, or Sunday at the Museum.

Bonsoli believes these new measures will encouraging a culture of curious young minds to learn more about Italy’s history and culture. Although we’re not sure that we agree with him, the good news is that Sunday at the Museum will be reintroduced in March next year.
