A guilty pleasure for many still and probably the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of fast food, McDonalds may just be getting a bit greener.
For instance, did you know that that several McDonald’s franchises in Sweden all house beehives on their rooftops? This started as a local initiative, and has become an eco trend that is spreading nationally and around the world, leading McDonald’s to go one step further and build a tiny bee ‘restaurant’.
NORDDBB, a creative design and branding company, was tasked with realising this project, and we must admit, the McHive looks quite a lot like a real McDonald’s franchise in miniature.
The global bee populations are decreasing significantly, and introducing urban hives is a brilliant initiative to come out of Sweden.
‘The initiative started out locally but is now growing,’ NORD DDB told a design journal. ‘More franchises around the country are joining the cause and have also started replacing the grass around their restaurants with flowers and plants that are important for the wellbeing of wild bees.’
The tiniest McDonald’s franchise is complete with a drive-thru, outdoor seating and the iconic yellow ‘M’ sign. It’s refreshing to see that McDonald’s, despite not being the healthiest food option out there, is making this rather sweet, green gesture, amid the buzz of worker strikes and other in-house dramas. Hopefully this will educate the fast-food loving masses and inspire greater awareness of bees and the environment.
