Spring snow sprinkles Lesotho

Springtime snow in South Africa and neighbouring Lesotho is not completely unusual, but it can take you by surprise just as you’ve packed away your beanie and gloves.

Afriski Resort, Sani Pass and Mokhotlong in Lesotho have all experienced some snow over the last couple of days, which initially made the roads only passable by 4×4. Afriski Resort has subsequently tweeted that roads have been opened to all vehicles. No new snowfall is predicted over the next few days.

If you do intend to head across the border from the Free State to make snow angles or to carve up the powder, there are new regulations that you need to be aware of.

According to Afriski, as of 1 September 2019, if you want to travel to Lesotho via the Free State Province, the following requirements need to be met:

1. A passport valid for at least six months after the date of your return to South Africa.

2. Certified colour copies of your passport, driver’s license, ID and vehicle registration papers.

3. If your vehicle is subject to a financial lease, hire purchase or loan agreement you will require a letter of authority from the financial institution giving you authority to take it across the border of Lesotho.

4. If the vehicle you’re driving is not yours you will require a letter of authority in the form of an affidavit from the registered owner.

This is in an effort by SAPS Free State to be pro-active in preventing cross-border crimes.
