The Alpine Eagle Race project took their white-tailed eagle (Europe’s largest eagle), Victor, to five countries to raise awareness on the plight of climate change in the Alps.
The nine-year-old bird of prey was fitted with a 360-degree camera on his back, to get a bird’s-eye-view of the Alps. He soared above Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps and in Europe, standing at 4,808m.
He is going to be visiting 5 other countries in 5 days, to highlight the effects of global warming on some of the world’s most beautiful places.
The Alpine Eagle Race project aims to create awareness about the melting glaciers as well as other effects of global warming. This is done by combining the eyes of the eagle, the mind of the scientist and the creativity of the photographer.
‘It is the first time that we can really see nature from the perspective of an eagle and we hope that (through) people seeing how beautiful our nature is, we can really raise awareness and actually give them a little reason to do something to reduce our impact on the climate,’ said Ronald Menzel, a co-founder of Eagle Wings, a foundation that aims to protect the Alps, to Reuters.
White-tailed eagles are listed as ‘least concern’ on an endangered species list by International Union for Conservation of Nature, but are now scarce in western Europe.
