The 750m extension of the Durban promenade was opened on Saturday 16 November. The beachfront promenade is now the longest in sub-Saharan Africa at over 8km and stretches from Blue Lagoon to the Durban Harbour mouth.
The new section, located between the harbour mouth and uShaka Marine World, is wheelchair-friendly and comes with a lifeguard tower, first aid room and undercover parking.

A fun run was held at the launch of the new section that will welcome pedestrians, cyclists and skaters, according to The South African. Some small businesses will be opening at the promenade during the festive season, ahead of further development in the area.

‘The municipality’s coastline has been enhanced and is gearing up to facilitate and attract billions in investments over the next 15 years in this precinct,’ said Ethekwini Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, who spoke at the launch.
‘It will enhance our tourism as a city. We are expecting other partners to build, including a five-star hotel that also incorporates the issues of the mall that will be developed. But we are also happy that you have seen from the Sun Coast Casino, the new development that has been invested, also the other hotels coming on board to inject more resources, to ascertain that we grow the economy and become more responsive to the aspirations of the youth, in particular, to create more much-needed jobs in our city.’
A R35-billion Point Waterfront Development, to be completed in three phases over the next 10 to 15 years, is expected to follow the building of the promenade’s extension.
