Man lives in barrel for 2 months, sets world record

Vernon Kruger has been living in a 500-litre wine barrel fixed to the top of a 25m pole, in the picturesque town of Dullstroom, for more than two months.

The 52-year old broke the Guinness World Record on 20 January 2020 – a record that he first set in 1997 – by staying in the barrel for 68 days.

‘I’m fed up, I’ve had enough,’ Kruger said from his barrel but has not come down just yet. ‘I’ve got to set the bar higher for the next guy, though I imagine that is probably going to be me,’ he told Good Things Guy.

Back in 1997, Kruger’s stunt garnered international attention and American radio and television personality Howard Stern, phoned Vernon while he was in the barrel to interview him.

His record was seemingly sought-after as many others have taken up the challenge to try and beat it, but could not. In 2003, US Illusionist David Blaine lived in a clear 2x2x1 meter box while dangling over the River Thames in London for 44 days.
