The famous Rotel, or Rolling Hotel (Das Rollende Hotel) tours the world on a bus that functions like a hotel. This week, a visitor spotted one in the Kruger National Park.
Rotel tours can accommodate up to 36 (non-claustrophobic) people.
The Rolling Hotel was founded in 1959 and currently boasts a fleet of 3,400 buses strong, according to Cool Things.com. Inside, travellers are assigned to rooms of roughly 1 x 1 x 2m which includes a bed with a window. All buses only get one communal toilet and no shower, but the bus stops on multiple occasions at designated camping grounds with bathroom facilities.
The bus has three South African tours, including one from Cape Town to Johannesburg via Namaqualand and the Kgalakgadi Transfrontier National Park; a 32-day trip from Cape Town through Port Elizabeth, Namibia and Zimbabwe to Johannesburg, according to SA People. The longest trip costs about R67,000, breakfast and dinner included.
