Canada’s hilarious hair-freezing contest

While South Africa is facing a sweltering summer in some parts of the country, Canada, of course is now in mid-winter. The northern country typically sees temperatures drop far below zero, and some locals are making the most of it with quite a competitive hair-freezing contest.

The Takhini hot springs in Canada’s Yukon Territory is a popular destination, and every year since 2011 tourists and Canadians alike flock to the pools to soak in the warm water while letting their bizarre hairdos freeze over in the chilly air.

The now-serious competition has an interesting back story. After attending winter sporting events all day, athletes competing in the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous love to relax in the Takhini springs to take a mineral bath. According to Mentalfloss.com, the manager in 2011 jokingly asked bathers to sculpt their wet hair into ‘frozen works of art’.
Whoever had the best selfie won the contest. Since then, the icy hair styling has reached new heights and competition is stiff. 

Categories include Best Male Photo, Best Female Photo, Most Creative Photo, and Best Group Photo. A splendid $2000, complimentary soaks, and free passes to Takhini’s newly renovated facility are all on the cards for winners.

This year’s contest is already underway and photos have started pouring in on HairFreezingContest.com . Entries are open until 8 March 2020 and this year’s winners will be announced on 15 March 2020.
