On Sunday 29 March two men were spotted surfing off of a beach in Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape. The pair directly contravened the Disaster Management Act, breaking national lockdown rules.
The men were transported to the local police station and fined R5,000 each, according to Kouga municipality spokesperson Laura-Leigh Randall who confirmed this to Times Live.
‘They were reported to the authorities by concerned residents and apprehended when they came out of the sea by members of the municipality’s law enforcement unit, the Jeffreys Bay police and a local security company,’ she said to Herald LIVE. ‘They were taken to the Jeffreys Bay police station, where they were released with a fine of R5,000 each.’
The two men are in their early 20s, and were apprehended at the popular surfer spot Supertubes Surf. If the men do not pay the fine, they can face up to six months jail time.
