The lockdown has its challenges, but also many benefits. One such perk is getting to know and appreciate the wildlife in our own back yards.
Over 4,000 households took part in a week-long ‘Birds of our Gardens’ project initiated by BirdLife Switzerland.
The conservation group asked participants to record the number of different bird species they encounter during their ‘balcony watching’ (as it has come to be described).
Little did they expect to receive 140,850 sightings reported! The most common reported sightings were blackbirds, sparrows and great tits.
A number of other species, including the goldfinch, greenfinch and girlitz also stood out, according to swissinfo.ch.
It goes to show that there is plenty to see right under our noses. This initiative also highlights the importance of conserving vegetation that provide the habitat for our feathered friends.
‘A small natural paradise can be created in any garden,’ said BirdLife Switzerland’s Raffael Ayé. ‘This requires native trees and shrubs, flower meadows or small structures such as piles of branches.’
