As Europe is slowly reopening its borders, some passenger flights have resumed but it seems that even in first world countries, mistakes are made.
German carrier Eurowings was en route to Sardinia, Italy from Düsseldorf when it had to turn around. Air traffic control informed the pilots that the airport has not reopened to commercial traffic.
The Airbus A320 hung around in a holding pattern in Italian skies hoping for permission to land, according to CNN.
The landing was a no-go and the plane headed back to Germany. The passengers were rebooked.
When asked how the misunderstanding could have occurred, a Eurowings spokesperson told CNN that ‘the large amount of information provided on operating hours or airport closures are often changed at short notice, and there are daily changes in entry regulations in the various countries.’
Italy’s Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is currently closed until at least 2 June.
