Portugal ready to reopen for tourists

Posted on 27 May 2020 By Anita Froneman

Summer is knocking on Europe’s door and several countries have stated they will be welcoming tourists when EU borders open from 15 June.

Portugal, the much-loved Mediterranean destination, said it is ready for action. The country has waived the recommended 14-day quarantine period other European countries have instated for all incoming tourists.

Portugal has not been hit quite as hard by the global pandemic, unlike its neighbours Italy and Spain.

‘Portugal’s health system responds well, and this is very important for us to be able to welcome people,’ Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva told Observador.

As a big part of Portugal’s yearly income depends on tourism, hotels will slowly reopen from the beginning of June, but will only be allowed to fill two thirds of their capacity.

Portugal is known for its rich culture, blissful beaches and exquisite food and wine.
