Hikers will be allowed back on trails again from June 1, under Level 3 restrictions. This announcement was made on Sunday night, hours before Level 4 was lifted.
On Saturday, Minister of tourism Kubayi-Ngubane said hiking would be permitted, but this decision was shrouded in uncertainty as all beaches and national parks remained closed under Level 3 restrictions.
SANParks clarified that certain hiking areas would be reopen, and more information will be released shortly.
“SANParks would like to announce that only its open-access national parks namely Golden Gate Highlands-, parts of Garden Route- and Table Mountain National Park with the exception of Boulders Beach and Cape Point will allow access to visitors from Monday, 1 June 2020.
“The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries will release a statement in due course regarding the opening of the other parks,” they said in a statement on their website.
Private and public game farms will also be allowed to reopen for game drives, however, group tours will remain banned. Beaches remain off limits.
