Airlines ban onboard alcohol service

Posted on 17 June 2020

Air travel is going to be a sober experience aboard some of the world’s major airlines. Following the coronavirus pandemic, KLM, Easyjet, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and Virgin Australia will not be serving alcoholic drinks, according to CNN.

The length of the suspension is unknown at this point. The move to suspend alcohol services is one of safety. Prohibiting this service aims to reduce passenger and crew interactions.

Wearing face masks has become compulsory on most international flights. Eating and drinking requires the removal of the mask. The less this happens the better.

Some airlines have made water the only available drink onboard.

Easyjet operates in Europe and resumed operations on 15 June between UK, France, Spain and a few other international routes. Passengers are allowed to bring their own food and non-alcoholic drinks as the only onboard refreshment available is water.

Dutch national carrier, KLM, has suspended all alcohol and hot drink services. Unlike Easyjet, soft drinks and water are both available.

Delta Airlines has simplified their dining experience onboard. ‘We’re paring down to essential onboard food and beverage options in an effort to reduce physical touch points between customers and employees. As always, you are welcome to bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages on board to enjoy during flight,’ said their website. No alcohol, plastic cups or ice will be available for U.S. Domestic and International flights to Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Central America.

American Airlines has made changes to their food and drink services depending on the flight duration and destination. In the main cabin alcohol will not be available but in First or Business, depending on duration and destination.

The airline wrote on their website: ‘We’re limiting food and drink service in the Main Cabin based on flight length and destination. You’re welcome to bring snacks and soft drinks on board to enjoy during your flight.’

A Virgin Australia representative spoke to Executive Traveller and said: ‘Due to Government restrictions and health advice associated with COVID-19, we’ve introduced changes to our inflight service offering including the temporary suspension of alcohol being served onboard. We are continuing to review these measures in line with the latest medical advice, easing of travel restrictions and guest feedback.’

South Africans are still unable to travel overseas for leisure under Level 3 restrictions.
