Wineries in South Africa are often associated with rolling vineyards and spectacular views. Mount Sutherland is no exception.
Situated on the Kanolfontein farm at the foot of the Sneeuberg, winemaker Daniël de Waal put his expertise to the test and planted the first vines in 2004.
Thus the Sutherland-Karoo wine growing region was born.
The farm is situated at an altitude of 1,500m above sea level. It is around 350km away from the Indian Ocean.
Mount Sutherland is officially the highest and coldest wine growing region on the African continent. It is part of the Super Single Vineyards, which focuses only on single vineyard wines.
Limited crops of Syrah, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay exist on the farm.
Winters are bitterly cold in Sutherland and summers are scorching during the day with somewhat cooler nights, which make for favourable wine-growing conditions.
Visits to Mount Sutherland are not available but wine fans can sample the goods at the Canettevallei Lavender And Wine Farm tasting room that De Waal owns in Stellenbosch.
