Remote areas of central Vietnam have been hit by Typhoon Molave, leaving mass destruction in its wake. This is the fourth storm to hit Vietnam this month.
The typhoon has battered the coast near Da Nang city. Its torrential rains have caused landslides and at least 19 people have died. However the exact death toll is undetermined.
Scores of people are missing according to BBC and more than one million people have been affected.
Approximately 375,000 people were evacuated to safety before the typhoon made landfall. Winds from the storm have reached 145km/h.
The storm began to move toward Thailand and Myanmar on Thursday, October 28 allowing rescuers to search for missing people.
‘We can forecast the storm path or the amount of rain, but can’t predict when landslides happen. The road is covered under deep mud and heavy rains are still lashing the area, but rescue work has to be carried out quickly,’ said Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung in a statement.
Soldiers have been working to clear landslide sites with bulldozers.
