Nuremberg’s Christmas market cancelled

Posted on 2 November 2020

The world-famous Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt has been cancelled for 2020 because of the global pandemic and an increase in cases in the city.

The market is one of Germany’s oldest and it attracts millions of tourists all year but especially at Christmas time.

The annual event has been held since the mid-16th century, according to Lonely Planet and the first mention of it in writing was in 1628.

Situated in Nuremberg’s main market square, visitors indulge in traditional German foods, Nuremberg gingerbread, wines, arts, crafts, and so much more.

There were plans to go ahead with the market under different, socially distant protocols. These included dividing the market into four different markets around the Old Town, to ease foot traffic in one area.

Spacing stalls out further away, mandatory mask wearing and other COVID-19 protocols would be implemented too. However, Marcus König, Nuremberg’s mayor has pulled the cord on the market as Germany is struggling to get a grip on case numbers.
