The new Empire State Trail spans 1,207 km in a three-way journey from New York City to the Canadian border and from Lake Erie to the Capital District.
This multi-activity trail is open for cyclists, hikers and campers with a multitude of attractions along the way such as the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, wineries, breweries, horse riding and even winter activities like cross-country skiing.
It consists of the three sections named the Hudson Valley Greenway, which starts in Battery Park in Manhattan; the Erie Canalway Trail, which runs between Buffalo and the Capital District around Albany; and the Champlain Valley Trail, between the Capital District and Canada.
‘Although most of the Empire State Trail route is off-road trail, some sections are designated on the shoulders of public roadways. The on-road sections, which are identified on the trail maps on this website, are intended for visitors comfortable walking or bicycling adjacent to motor vehicle traffic,’ the website reads.
The trail is expected to drive tourism in the state of New York and will afford visitors ‘unprecedented access to New York’s outdoor treasures, driving tourism and economic activity to communities across the state and helping to protect our environmental resources for generations to come,’ Governor Andrew Cuomo said in 2017 when the project was launched.
