Wine is taken very seriously in Italy, and there are several areas in the north and south of the picturesque country that produce some of the globe’s finest.
Starting in 2021, Italy will have its own official Città del Vino, or a City of Wine.
This decision was made by the Città del Vino national association, which is a group that brings together towns and cities in the country’s wine regions.
Its duties also cover the promotion and protection of Italian wine and its relationship with the location it comes from.
In 2020, the association decided to assign the very first Wine City title to the town of Barolo.
Barolo is a commune in the Province of Cuneo in the Italian region Piedmont.
Barolo is located in the Piedmontese province of Cuneo, and it the birthplace of the homonymous Barolo red wine. Barolo is also considered an enviable location since it’s sitting right in the middle of the Langhe hills, which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
Barolo beat six other towns, and now has an event calendar filled with exhibitions, classes, seminars and installations for the entirety of 2021.
‘This year has been a very difficult year and we believe that this new campaign is a loud message of hope and new beginnings,’ said Barolo’s mayor Renata Bianco to LonelyPlanet.
The general theme of the year will be a journey through time, and this will entail rediscovering traditional celebrations, the slow passage of seasons and the memories of the individuals who contributed to the history of Barolo wine.
