Elangeni Green Zone in Durban sign with supermarket

Posted on 18 November 2020

The Elangeni Green Zone, Durban’s first city farm, has signed a deal with Boxer Superstores, a subsidiary of Pick n Pay. The farm is the brainchild of a group of men who converted land into an abundant garden during South Africa’s hard lockdown.

‘Boxer Superstores decided to step in and offer support for these incredible men and ensuring that their spinach, tomatoes and peppers will not only find their way onto Boxer shelves and the plates of families in Durban, but will also generate continuous income for all the men on the farm,’ said the business in a Facebook post.

Boxer will also be donating a number of gardening supplies, including seedlings, drums, gumboots and more.

Currently, the men need supplies to help build a greenhouse for herbs before December. The items they need are:

  • Hammers
  • Hacksaw for cutting poles
  • A tape measure 5m
  • Poles measuring 4 m each
  • U nails 6 and 4 inch

If you are able to donate these items, contact the Green Team on 068 088 7327.

About the Elangeni Green Zone

The men were housed near to the lot during South Africa’s hard lockdown by the eThekwini Municipality. All previously unemployed and homeless, the men decided to put their skills to good use.

The project was initially created as a source of fresh food and means to earn income.

The eThekwini Municipality gave the men permission to use the land and has grown into a source of stability and dignity.
