OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg marked its busiest day for travel this holiday season thus far on Friday, December 18.
More than 30,000 passengers boarded domestic flights and 6,500 flyers crossed international borders, according to eNCA.
Friday is being billed as the busiest day of the festive season for airline authorities.
OR Tambo has seven COVID-19 testing centres that are able to produce PCR test results within an hour for international travellers that arrive in the country without a negative test certificate.
Health and safety protocols are strictly enforced and airport authorities warn passengers not to test the system as they will be removed from flights.
The airport is considered to be one of the busiest on the continent under normal circumstances and consistently handles more than 11-million domestic and 8-million international travellers every financial year (from April to March), according to Airports Company South Africa (ACSA).
However, in the current financial year, it has only seen 171,897 international travellers and 1,360,796 domestic travellers so far.
