If you’re tired of posing in front of towers and looking at paintings, try a more exciting tourist experience. The Pool of Arches in Israel is a 1,200-year-old underground reservoir, and you can explore everything the historic site has to offer on a rowboat.
Gliding across the waters that once sustained the residents of Ramla will take you about 20 minutes and has fifteen columns to paddle around.
The reservoir is also known as the ‘Pool of Goats’ in Arabic, as animals used to drink from the cistern, according to the city’s tourism website. The pool measures 19.82 x 21.17 meters and in the winter, its waters overflow and are pumped off.
On the roof, visitors can still see the square hatches carved into the stone where residents lowered their buckets to collect water. There is also an exhibit on the history of the building and reservoir at the exit point, according to Atlas Obscura.
A tour will cost you only 3$ (around R45) and will give insight into a bygone era, while offering respite from the summer heat.
