Singapore is planning to redevelop the city of Tengah to become an ‘evergreen’ eco-friendly environment by incorporating smart technology.
‘The key features of Tengah will revolve around nature and the community, to create an endearing town where future residents can experience being “At Home with Nature,”’ the developers say on their website.
The city centre will be completely car-free.
The city will be piloting a centralised cooling system at selected precincts to regulate the temperature within residents’ homes and aims to be more energy-efficient than individual air-conditioning units.
‘Tengah is a clean slate,’ Chong Fook Loong, group director for research and planning at Singapore’s Housing and Development Board (HDB) said according to CNN. ‘We’re going for the ideal concept of segregation of traffic, (with) everything underground and then the ground level totally freed up for pedestrians — for people. So, it’s a very safe environment for all.’
The new city will offer 42,000 brand new homes, a car-free city centre in a 100-metre-wide ‘ecological corridor’ and high-tech features like automated household waste removal. Another addition to decreasing energy consumption is the smart lighting feature, which will manage the lighting levels based on human traffic within the precincts.
‘We want a town that allows walking and cycling in a very user-friendly manner,’ Chong added.
The completion date for the new city has not been confirmed.
