Aleksander Doba has died age 74 on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on Monday February 22. The Polish adventurer was world-famous for his oceanic kayak voyages.
In October 2010, Doba voyaged across the Atlantic Ocean by kayak, from Senegal to Brazil and completed his trip in February 2011. Three years later in 2013 he crossed the Atlantic from Portugal to the US, starting October 2013 and arriving in April 2014.
In 2015 he was awarded National Geographic’s People’s Choice Adventurer of the Year.
He would go on to do this for a third time in 2017, at the age of 70, from the US to France. The journey took him 111 days, he completed the trip a week before his 71st birthday.
Doba was one of three people who crossed the Atlantic Ocean by kayak and was a retired engineer.
His family announced his passing on Tuesday, February 23 in a Facebook post: ‘It is with profound regret that we announce the death of the great kayaker Alesander Doba on February 22. He died like an adventurer after reaching Africa’s highest peak, Kilimanjaro, realising his dreams.’
Doba reportedly lost consciousness after reaching the 5,891.8-metre peak and did not come to, despite attempts to revive him.
