Fynbos Life launched the retail division of their Cape Flats fynbos nursery on 8 August 2021, the first of its kind, encouraging locally indigenous planting in urban gardens.
The nursery, which groups plants according to its broad field type, is the first of its kind. But why all the fuss? With Cape Town recognised by the United Nations as the ‘Most Diverse City in the World,’ it is also recognised as the ‘Extinction Capital of the world,’ with the Cape Floral Kingdom suffering the second-highest loss of plant species in the past 100 years globally.
This drives a core mandate of Fynbos Life, which seek to cultivate care for the local environment by bridging the divide between rural wilderness and suburbia. Gardening is then the ideal method to bring back the ‘wild’ into our cities, having knock-on effects in providing food and habitat for other indigenous species.
The launch of their nursery promotes and popularises Cape Town’s biodiversity through indigenous plants, a core tenet of the cape biome. It has always been their intention to raise the profile of the rich natural heritage of the geographical region of the Cape Flats.
An indigenous nursery could not have been more welcomed, and with plants grouped according to their veld type, you can be assured of their expertise. Fynbos is a unique, endemic and it is important to ensure its longevity and the ecological integrity of the Cape.
