Caracal spotted hiking Platteklip Gorge in Cape Town

Posted on 18 October 2021 By David Henning

With an estimated population of 60 caracals in Cape Town’s metropolitan area, it is the Mother City’s last remaining large predator. For a long time, and amongst many communities, the caracal was seen as a ‘problem animal,’ often a victim of predator control mechanisms.

Fortunately, and thanks to the work of the Urban Caracal Project, Cape Town’s ‘urban’ caracal population have become better understood, and we get very excited when they are spotted on Table Mountain.

Andrea Wiedermann came across a caracal when hiking up Platteklip Gorge, and the cat even joined her for some time as she made her way up the ascent.

She wasn’t the only one to get lucky with a caracal sighting. On the other side of Tabe Mountain, Caroline Jordaan came across another caracal en route to the contour path just above Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
