The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital recently took eight new-born large spotted genets under their care, giving them a second chance at life.
Genets are widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from the Volta River in Ghana down to the KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa. These elusive, nocturnal creatures are classified as Least Concern under both the Regional and National Red List. Their habitats are diverse, and while they are predominantly carnivores, that doesn’t stop them from munching on a berry or two.
As all genets are still neonates, they are being bottle fed with a special milk formula. The hospital stated that once the genets are old enough to be able to support themselves, they’ll go into a soft-release process. This process entails supporting the genets with food until they reach full independence and establish their own territory. Whilst lengthy, it is nonetheless a rewarding process.
