United States reopens its borders to travellers after 20 months

Posted on 8 November 2021 By Taylah Strauss

Following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, in an effort to curb infection rates, the United States closed its borders after March 2020 to travellers from large parts of the world. After 20 months of imposed lockdown restrictions, the US reopens its borders.

The lifting of the travel ban will affect more than 30 countries. However, entry to the US will not be unregulated. Starting Monday, air passengers must be fully vaccinated.

Reopening of the land border will take place in two phases, the first of which begins Monday, in which travellers on non-essential trips will be required to be fully vaccinated. Unvaccinated travellers on essential trips will still be allowed into the country.

The second phase will begin in early January 2022, and will require all travellers to be fully vaccinated, irrespective of trip status. The vaccines must be approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

In addition to monitoring travellers’ vaccination status, all travellers are required to produce negative Covid-19 test results not older than 72 hours.
