After months of strict travel restrictions, New Zealand is planning to phase out border restrictions introduced during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The country plans to open its borders for foreign nationals as well as international visitors from 30 April 2022.
New Zealand will begin its venture of phasing out the border restrictions by implementing a series of changes that could stimulate travel and allow tourism within the country to resume.
The fully vaccinated New Zealand citizens will be able to travel between Australia and New Zealand without going through New Zealand’s quarantine system also known as MIQ. The citizens will now be allowed to undergo a seven-day quarantine in their own homes. This will be implemented from 17 January 2022.
The next phase will be implemented from14 February 2022. This phase will allow New Zealand’s citizens to travel into New Zealand by flight from countries that are not on the ‘very high risk’ list for Covid-19. The travellers will additionally be obligated to undergo a seven day quarantine period in their homes. New Zealand plans to open its borders entirely on the 30th of April 2022 to both foreign nationals and to international travellers, including travellers from Australia.
While New Zealand plans to return back to normal, travel during 2022 will be very different. All travellers will be required to provide a negative test result, their proof of vaccination, as well as a declaration that they have not travelled to ‘high risk’ countries. Travellers will also be required to participate in regular testing protocols upon arrival in New Zealand.
