The South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (SAWRC) has taken newborn hedgehogs – hoglets – under their care.
Jessica and Theo Roux called SAWRC after a forklift accidentally disrupted a hedgehog nest in a hay-bale. The mother of the hoglets fled, and when she did not return, the hoglets were taken to Leanne Hezlett, the manager of the Pretoria branch.
Hezlett began warming up the hoglets and hydrating them with milk formula. Per standard protocol, the hoglets will be cared for until they are self-sufficient, and only then will they be released into a designated area free from human interference.
SAWRC is a rehabilitation centre founded to assist and rescue injured and orphaned wildlife. Located 14kms outside of Springs in Gauteng, the centre handles approximately 6000 cases annually. This includes various birds, ducks, mammals, reptiles, tortoises, and snakes. This includes all endangered species.
