SA Weather Service issues severe weather warning for Western Cape

Posted on 6 December 2021 By Taylah Strauss

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued weather warnings for parts of the Western Cape. Recently, the Western Cape has been badly affected by severe weather conditions including heavy rains resulting in flooding, hail, and damaging winds which have destroyed homes and resulted in the closure of certain roads.

Weather warning issued for parts of SA

Two weather warnings have been issued, one of which is an orange level 6 warning, which means that the severe weather conditions have a high probability of occurring and doing extensive damage. Individuals can expect flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying areas.

Gusty winds and heavy downpours can damage infrastructure and result in the disruption of essential services. Vehicular drivers are encouraged to exercise caution, as hail may occur which will make the roads more slippery.

Individuals are advised not to seek shelter under tall trees or objects, and not to go fishing or play golf, as both instruments involved are good conductors for electricity from lightning strikes.

Affected areas of the level 6 orange warning include George, Mossel Bay, Knysna, Stilbaai, Swellendam, Montagu Barrydale, Ladismith and surrounding areas.

Other areas have been issued a yellow level 2 warning, which means that the probability of bad weather conditions occurring is still high, but the damage could be minor.

Localised flash flooding of low-lying areas, susceptible roads and bridges due to heavy downpours may be expected. Roads may also be slippery if small hail occurs. Localised damage to infrastructure and short term disruption to essential services is also possible. Individuals are encouraged to remain indoors, and to not go fishing or golfing.

Affected areas of the level 2 yellow warning include Worcester, Hermanus, Beaufort West, and surrounding areas.

These weather conditions are expected to last throughout today, and may continue or worsen tomorrow.
