The United States is reeling after several tornadoes ripped through the mid-western states of Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky on Friday, December 10.
The town of Mayfield, Kentucky is believed to be the worst hit with at least 80 people dead and the death toll expected to rise, according to BBC. President Joe Biden approved an emergency disaster declaration on Saturday for Kentucky. ‘It’s a tragedy. And we still don’t know how many lives are lost and the full extent of the damage,’ Biden said.
Rescue teams are still searching for missing persons. Buildings were left with roofs ripped off, trees were ripped out of the ground and several towns are left without water supply or electricity.
‘The devastation is unlike anything I have seen in my life and I have trouble putting it into words,’ said Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear Beshear according to Al Jazeera. ‘It’s very likely going to be over 100 people lost here in Kentucky.’
The string of twisters is estimated to have torn through at least 365km of land.
