Qatar Airways resumes operations to South Africa

Posted on 6 January 2022 By Taylah Strauss

Qatar Airways’ return to South Africa has been marked by uncertainty for quite some time now. The discovery of the Omicron variant prompted mass travel bans against South African passengers, in which Qatar followed suit.

The airline announced in a now-deleted tweet it would resume normal operations with South Africa starting 12 December 2021. This announcement was quickly backtracked as the airline began notifying passengers that their flights had been cancelled, leaving them in the dust once more.

The airline then announced that it would be extending its ban against South African passengers until 12 January 2022.

Qatar Airways has now announced their return to South Africa which include flights from South Africa to Doha starting January 13. However, travellers will only be allowed to transit through Hamad International Airport, according to Travel News.
