Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) was in the middle of a training session when another trail runner alerted one of its members that a man had collapsed on the contour path below Devil’s Peak on January 22.
Part of the WSAR training session included having a technical rescuer and two paramedics on site who were immediately taken to the collapsed runner. Someone had already been attempting to do CPR, which was unsuccessful, and he was declared dead on arrival, according to TimesLive.
WSAR suspects that the cause of death may have been a heart attack, but only the autopsy results will tell.
His body was removed via helicopter and handed to the forensics department of the South African Police Service, where an inquest was opened.
