Killarney’s first Three-Way Bonanza of 2022 will take place on Saturday 26 February, featuring a triple treat of Drag Racing, Short Circuit and Rallycross – and spectators are welcome.
In addition to MSA Drag Racing on the Porsche Club Straight from 9am to 5pm, there’s Short Circuit Racing on the Half Main circuit from 9am, followed by Rallycross on the World RX circuit from 2pm to 6pm – and yes, your ticket is good for all three events!
Competitive Drag Racing under MSA rules is when the big guns come out at Killarney – heavy hitters such as Mitchells Plain’s own monster truck, the Chev Lumina Ute ‘Suspect’, powered by a 6.2-litre LSX V8 and driven by Taariq Barmania, Tolla Daniels’ ridiculously quick Australian-powered ‘Barrascort’ and ‘Jack Russell’, Hermann Mostert’s insane 2JZ powered Nissan Champ bakkie.
They’ll face off on Saturday 26 February against a number of modified street cars and purpose-built drag racers, including Shaun Zurich’s Honda Civic, reputed to be the quickest naturally aspirated front-wheel-drive car in Africa, Jody van Schoor’s 9.5-second Volkswagen Golf Mk1 and new kid on the strip, Shurud Jacobs’ bright red Toyota Hilux bakkie.
However, there are classes for everything, including superbikes and street cars, so you’re guaranteed a full day of straight-line action, with a variety of food and drinks on sale from upmarket vendors who know just how to re-fuel motorsport fans.
Short Circuit Racing at Killarney is where tomorrow’s Superbike champions learn their craft in short, intense lessons of 10 laps each on a tight 1.3-kilometre circuit that has no straight longer than 200 metres.
Youngsters from five years of age start racing on pocket bikes and move on from there to 150cc machines, Supersport 300s and Motards (big 450cc off-road bikes with road wheels and tyres).
The 2022 season of ‘Killarney’s Best-Kept Secret’ kicks off on Saturday 26 February with a full programme of races for MiniMoto/PocketBikes, 125/150cc Motorcycle Juniors and Seniors, Super Motard Juniors and Seniors and ClubSport – a combined category comprising SSP 300, Moto 3, Moto 4 and Supermono Motorcycles that always provides close and completely unpredictable racing.
Rallycross combines the best aspects of rallying, drifting and stock cars in one exciting, high-octane spectacle, with short four or six-lap races on a purpose-built 1.3 kilometre, part-tarmac, part dirt-track circuit in a stadium-type arena that includes a huge jump and a lot of sideways action – and the best part is that you can sit anywhere on the stands and see almost the whole circuit.
And just to make it more interesting, the circuit includes a long dirt right-hander with an even longer (but faster) tarred corner around the outside. Each competitor has to go the long way round once in every race; it’s called the Joker Lap because it often turns the race order on its ear.
Killarney cares about your health and well-being, so all competitors, crew members, officials and spectators are temperature-screened on entry; you must wear a mask covering your nose and mouth, and keep a social distancing space of at least 1.5 metres between persons at all times.
Spectator tickets cost only R80 for adults, R20 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12 and for Western Province Motor Club members on production of their membership book at the gate on entry – and for that, you get access to not one, not two, but three events.
Spectator tickets are available from Computicket, with limited numbers also available at the gate. Please bear in mind that once you have purchased your tickets online, you must still collect the physical tickets, including the free tickets for children under 12, at Computicket or the Computicket outlet at the Money Market counter in your nearest Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper or Usave store.
