Central and south-eastern parts of South Africa are expected to face rainy and cold conditions starting on 8 April and continuing throughout the weekend. Localised flooding may affect certain areas.
South African Weather Service (SWAS), said the provinces that may be affected include the eastern parts of the Northern and Eastern Cape, Free State, North-West, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Highveld region of Mpumalanga.
‘Associated with these rainy conditions, localised flooding is likely to affect the agricultural sector, infrastructure and settlements over the North-West, the northern parts of the Free state and Gauteng on Friday, including the eastern parts of the Northern Cape, the northern and eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Mpumalanga Highveld on Saturday,’ SWAS added.
‘Localised disruptions to beachfront activities as well as incidents of damage to coastal infrastructure may also occur along the coastal region between Port Alfred and Sodwana Bay.’
The Northern Cape, western parts of the North-West and Free State, and the north-western parts of the Eastern Cape can expect the rain to subside on Sunday. However, localised flooding may persist on Sunday in some parts of these regions.
Very cold conditions will accompany this wet spell over the southern and south-eastern interior of South Africa on Friday and will spread to central and eastern interior regions on Saturday.
The Drakensberg mountains and the eastern and southern parts of Lesotho may even experience light snowfall on Saturday and Sunday nights.
‘The South African Weather Service strongly urges the public to avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams, especially in cases where the water is more than ankle-deep. SAWS also recommends moving to higher ground if rising floodwaters threaten one’s safety.’
