A darter had a grand meal in Rietvlei Nature Reserve in Gauteng, and Adrian Hunter managed to capture it on camera. The bird caught and swallowed a fish that looked much too big for the darter’s slender throat at first sight, but easily gulped it down.
Darters, also called snakebirds, eat mostly fish but will also tuck into frogs or reptiles from time to time. Their cunning hunting technique includes spearing the prey with their beaks, tossing it up in the air and catching it perfectly before swallowing it whole.
