Three days a year, Franschhoek comes alive as its cobblestone streets fill with readers, writers, and publishers all in attendance of the annual literary festival.
You heard that right: the Franschhoek Literary Festival (FLF) is back!
FLF ran for 13 consecutive years until it was cancelled due to the pandemic. The festival, however, was able to return in 2022 thanks to a group of donors and volunteers determined to make it happen.
The festival brings together South African and international authors to facilitate informal conversations between the authors, chairpersons, and the audience. Over 100 authors will be part of the festival this year, with several notable South African figures such as Imraan Coovadia.
He has written several novels, including the highly acclaimed High Low In-between and Tales of the Metric System, as well as his most recent work, The Poisoners. This non-fiction book examines the horrifying history of toxins and poisoning allegations among spies, politicians, and soldiers in South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Coovadia has received several accolades and oversees the creative writing programme at the University of Cape Town.

When: 13 – 15 May. Unless otherwise stated, the day begins at 10am and ends at 5pm, with a half-hour break between each event.
