Tokara is the only South African producer to be included on the 50 Great White Wines of the World 2022 list.
The family-owned wine estate in Stellenbosch received a score of 94/100 for the Tokara Director’s Reserve White 2018, a wine, says the estate, that represents exactly what it stands for – refinement, elegance and balance.
It has a Platter five-star rating and is a Decanter World Wine Awards gold medallist.
Tokara Director’s Reserve White 2018 is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (63%) and Semillon (37%), and the grapes are grown on the highest slopes of the Simonsberg foothills. Look out for notes of gooseberry and pink grapefruit, as well as hints of lemon grass and lightly toasted almonds.
The 50 Great White Wines of the World is held annually by Wine Pleasures, based in Barcelona, Spain. Wine Pleasures also holds 50 Great Sparkling Wines and 50 Great Red Wines of the World.
The five-person judging panel tasted wines from South Africa, Australia, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Moldova, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain. Only outstanding wines make it to the top of the list. It’s a blind tasting, with the team aware only of the grape varieties, region, country, level of sweetness and time in oak.
Tokara Reserve Collection White 2018 costs R320.
