An American tourist fell into the Mount Vesuvius crater after trying to receive his phone – which he dropped when taking a selfie atop the dormant volcano.
A 23-year-old man was allegedly hiking an unauthorised trail with his three relatives on Saturday morning, 9 July. The peak of Vesuvius gives way to incredible views of Naples.
The man dropped the phone into the crater a few metres below – which is 450 m wide and up to 300 m deep – and when trying to retrieve it, he fell into the ash of the crater before park officials descended 15 metres to rescue him.
Mount Vesuvius famously erupted in 79AD, burying cities such as Pompeii in a deep layer of volcanic debris which preserved the ancient city. It last erupted in 1944 and is currently in a state of ‘active rest,’ according to Pompei and Vesuvius National Park.
The hiker sustained several bruises and was treated by an ambulance that arrived on the scene.
