What you need to get into Japan

Posted on 28 July 2022 By Anita Froneman

Japan is one of the few countries still enforcing strict entry regulations to prevent the spread of Covid, and has countries listed by colour according to their presumed risk category. The country has also waived all visa-free entry.

Japan’s cherry blossoms are a popular tourist attraction.

Currently, South Africa is on the Blue list and can apply for a visa, but only as part of an organised tour group with a pre-approved itinerary. Travellers from this list do not have to provide proof of Covid vaccination.

Quarantine and testing on arrival are no longer applicable to countries on the Blue list, but all travellers must submit a PCR test not older than 72 hours.

Travellers from the Red list have to test upon arrival and quarantine for three days at a government facility. Visitors from countries on the Yellow list have to test and quarantine for three days at home; or they can forgo the test and quarantine for seven days.

All visitors have to install a COVID-19 tracing app for the duration of their stay.
