Cape Town is set to receive more flights from London this summer with several airlines, including British Airways (BA), adding to their flight frequencies, despite BA cancelling up to 10 000 flights.
Europe has been hit by airport short staffing and airline strikes throughout its summer seasons as the aviation industry sought to bounce back from Covid.
BA has cancelled more than 10,000 flights to and from London’s Heathrow Airport in the coming months, as the airport intends to extend its daily cap of 100 000 daily passengers. This was introduced in order to cope with airlines not hiring enough staff during the recent holiday spike.
A total of 1 258 flights have been cancelled to comply with the extension of the cap, and an additional 10 000 flights have been axed between the end of October and March next year.
Despite these cancellations, Cape Town will see an increase in flight frequencies from the UK, as BA adds an additional daily flight and Virgin Atlantic resumes its daily London-Heathrow service to Cape Town from November.
Before Covid, British arrivals made up the majority of foreign visitors to South Africa, and the city of Cape Town expects to welcome an influx of visitors from the UK thanks to the increased flight frequencies.
