The Blue Train has veered a bit off track lately with Covid halting all its operations. But a derailment and fire halted all operations just as the train was beginning to gather steam when restrictions were lifted.
A trip aboard the train between Cape Town and Pretoria is considered as one of the most luxurious train journeys in the world, often referred to as a ‘moving five-star hotel on wheels’.
Guests on the train have access to fine dining resteraunts, elegant lounges and luxury suits. In November 2021, the train derailed, postponing its return to service.
Then in February 2022, a fire broke out while the train was in for repairs at the company’s engineering facility in Koedoespoort.
Transnet has however announced that it has completed its investigations that led to the suspension, and that this ‘paves the way fo services to resume imminently’.
‘A test train has recently been concluded successfully, to ensure that the train is ready to resume with services, and passengers will soon be able to continue to enjoy the Blue Train’s award-winning service. Further details on resumption of service will be communicated in the coming days,’ Transnet stated.
