After a two-year absence thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mother City has finally announced the return of the Kaapse Klopse Carnival also known as “Tweede Nuwe Jaar”.
During a media briefing held earlier this week, The City of Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis committed to signing a three-year deal with the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association which would help elevate proceedings and add much-needed relief and assistance to organisers.
The Minstrel and Malay choir associations were attending the briefing and found the news a huge source of relief. Muneeb Gambeno of the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association welcomed the return and highlighted the event’s cultural tradition and history.
‘We all know what we’ve missed on these event days, what should’ve been event days. It’s the noise, the sounds, the celebration,’ he said. ‘The carnival this year is in its 116th year since the 1st carnival was held in collaboration with the city. So there’s deep roots, deep history.’
The festival is a century-old tradition, that celebrates colour, music and the Cape Malay heritage on 2 January of every year.
