Plettenberg Bay to get Shark Spotters

Posted on 4 November 2022 By David Henning

Plettenberg Bay has seen an increase in great white shark activity and the area’s Bitou Municipality has now partnered with Shark Spotters to implement shark safety strategies along the town’s coast.

Plettenberg made headlines after a woman died in an encounter with a great white on 25 September and the municipality stated that it was to implement safety measures to avoid shark encounters and put together a formalised Plett Shark Action Plan.

Shark Spotters announced that their team are doing detailed site inspections for spotting and exploring the possibility of installing a custom-designed exclusion net, much like its exclusion net in Fish Hoek.

The implementation of shark safety measures will take into account its marine ecosystem, especially after Plett Tourism proudly announced that it was a candidate to become a Whale Heritage sight due to its focus on supporting marine biodiversity.
