King Shaka International officially launched its new tech focused R36 million parking system on 15 November 2022.

The new system is aimed at saving time for travellers while making payments and also making it easier for them to find parking.
Some of the added upgrades include being able to pay for parking by credit card by swiping it at the exit instead of going to the pay station, and green lights at parking bays to indicate available parking.
Trevor Naidoo who is the Airports Company South Africa IT manager for cluster 3 was in attendance and this is what he had to say.
‘The original system was old and outdated, we were having issues with how tickets were processed and the accuracy of the values. We felt we needed to change the system and it’s been a long wait for the system to be launched.’
‘The security aspect is one of the key aspects of the system. Everybody wants their vehicle to be safe and secure. We will now have facial recognition and a licence plate recognition system. We also have double boom and double spikes to ensure the safety of vehicles.’
He also added that in order to combat the carbon footprint they were in the gradual process of phasing out physical parking tickets.
‘When members of the public come to use the parking, they will scan at the entrance and at the exit and they will be issued with an email that will have the amount owing for the time spent in the parking bay.’
‘There are two payment options. The first option would be to scan your credit card for payment at the exit. While the second option would be the cash option where you would simply pay the cash amount sent to you via email.’
A mobile app has also been launched to assist users to find parking bays and compare rates.
‘This will assist with users who are going to park for a certain number of days because they are going on a tip.’
