Kaziranga National Park, the largest reserve for the endangered rhino, did not lose a single rhino to poachers in 2022.
Located in India’s Assam state, Kaziranga National Park is one of the most popular wildlife holiday destinations in the country. It is home to more than 2,200 Indian one-horned rhinoceros or about two-thirds of the total global population. The park is characterized by elephant-grass meadows, swampy lagoons, and dense forests.

Between 2000 and 2021, poachers killed 190 rhinos in Assam, with a record of 27 rhinos poached in both 2013 and 2014. According to Reuters, poachers sought to sell the horns for thousands of dollars in East Asia, where they are prized as medicine and jewellery. The last time Assam saw no rhino poaching was in 1977.
To keep the pressure on poaching gangs and maintain the zero poaching rate for a few years until it becomes the norm, the Assam Police is also planning to increase investigations into those who buy rhino horns in other parts of the world.
