White rhino charges a game vehicle in the Greater Kruger area

While out on a morning game drive, a white rhino suddenly charged at a game vehicle. Luckily the guide managed to expertly steer the car and all the passengers safely away.

Stasia Chapman shared with LatestSightings that she was on a game drive with some friends when they spotted a white rhino about 100 m away feeding on grass. They noticed the rhino suddenly lift its head and look in the direction of the game vehicle.

Their guide began moving the car forward as he immediately sensed the threat. The passengers all suspected the rhino was merely curious when it started trotting towards them, but soon realised the situation was more dangerous than that. ‘The rhino accelerated to a gallop and headed straight for’ the vehicle.

Chapman described how their guide yelled ‘Hold on tight!’ while hitting the gas peddle to accelerate even more. The group could hear the rhino snorting as it got closer and closer. She explained that they were trying to keep their balance while they bounced around in their seats.

‘The chase lasted for several hundred metres, which felt like an eternity,’ but luckily their guide ‘managed to outmaneuver the rhino and steer [them] to safety.’ They all cheered in relief once the chase had come to an end. Chapman added that ‘this was not the guide’s fault, as he had followed the park rules and acted responsibly.’

There is no definitive reason for why the rhino charged the vehicle, especially as white rhinos are considered more docile than black rhinos. However, they can still be dangerous and unpredictable when feeling territorial, threatened, or protective of their young.
